Been able to do anything you can imagine on the web, within a clear simple framework of open standards with no ambiguity.

It's just a hollow phrase that is now used primarily not for its meaning, but its current buzz. The "open web" is good. The "open web movement" blows.

That I don't have to be locked into anything, locked to a company/service or whatever. I want friends on Facebook but not be there myself, why can't I do that? Distributed social networking.

Web sites using non-proprietary interoperable technologies and protocols, plus data portability. No Plug-ins or customized browsers required to access content. HTML, CSS, JavaScript, XMPP, RSS, etc.

A web where every code is known and every process is also known. You know how a program is made and where your informations go.

A web based mainly (totally ?) on open-source standard (front or back-office), and at the same time accessible (economic or human level (like in http://bit.ly/13GeT7)) A dream closing in ? I hope !

Open web is about the user owning its data, about being able to view content without proprietary plugins, about sharing, and the same spirit as free and open software.

The open web to me is a virtually superconducting memetic organism. The crescendo of billions intertwined across communities, web services, cultures, content, and all that is hyper with no boundaries.

A web that's free- as in both free speech and free beer- and patrolled by a vigilant netizens who are ready to visit virtual  violence on those who are evil(spammers, phisers, child porn kings).

It means - API's.  It means - data access.  It means - welcoming people behind all these sites, who are "open" to interacting with you.

Nothing or anything -- as someone who closely follows free software, I have seen the term used for everything, including references that I would have called closed.

It means a Web with only free/"libre" technologies.

It's like free software ("free" as in "free speech") - anyone can use a service and build upon it. User owns his data, so he's free to migrate to another service anytime. Also - services synergy.

Freedom to access to data, information(s), ressources, etc... the way I want with the technology I want, whenever, wherever and however I want. Plus, sharing and collaboration, mashups, remixing.

Interoperable standards developed in the open that separates implementation from functionality and lets everyone build against and contribute back to.

It's a carefully-undefined marketing term whose non-ironic use suggests that the speaker honestly does not realize s/he is not actually communicating.

An open media where everyone can contribute, adapt and customized to their needs. And all these things are made with open standard for interoperability

Open web means that specifications are peer reviewed and available to be used/implemented by anyone for free.

Accessibility and anarchy: Anyone can write on it. Anyone can make it do cool new stuff. And nobody controls more than their own corner of it.

Developers can make a complete browser without being limited by closed standards, patents, proprietary plugins, etc in web technologies. End users can view the web in the way they choose.

The open web is the creation and distribution of ideas for the sake of the ideas themselves, and to promote the betterment and transparency of those ideas.

I means both clients and servers that can be replaced with open source code, and the availability of my (the user's) data in case the server ever turns evil.

The open web is document formats and data that you can save, view whenever you want, process with your tools, hack, and republish.

Open technology (e.g. video, audio, canvas, SVG) as opposed to closed (Flash, Quicktime, etc).  Open data (XML feeds, APIs).  Open access, by which I mean data nd experiences that are available to all (accessibility, progressive enhancement, fallback content, etc).

It's a general term that means to me that the Web (and the Internet) should always be reachable, usable and hackable by anyone anywhere

Open Web to me means that companies that are developing browsers are trying to make the Web accessible to all users, on all platforms, by supporting developers who are developing with web standards.

Code is freely available for the developers from all over the world, and there are lots of opportunities for the improvements.

That it is universial, that it's build around open standards (No proprietary browser dependant stuff!). No constraints what so ever to the creativity in how one can display and use various kinds of information.

Creating web pages using w3c standards (and so avoiding to check browser type and differentiate code, plus no flash at all) on the server side, using an open source browser on the client side.

For me, it means keeping the web an open platform, through the creation of standards and technology that does not tie you down to one vendor or solution, as opposed to "blackbox" solutions.

Open web to me, is a pair of words that I hear all the time, like any other buzz word. It has zero meaning to me. Didn't realise that until you asked. Now guessing: portability of social graphs?

"Open web" means I can happily kick Firebug and hack the html/css/js part of badly maintained ugly proprietary enterprise software I'm working on. In short, open web makes the client happy.

It means that the motivation for learning and sharing exceeds the motivation for earning ($) and hoarding. Knowledge should be spread, not sold.

It means nothing to me. It just sounds like marketing gobbledygook. The Web has always been open, so "open web" can't mean anything new. It's redundant and repetitive.

A web without M$

Simply, the freedom to do whatever with any ["hard", "soft"]ware for any purpose at any time and free of charge.  No limitations infringed, ever. (Except legal issue obviously)

It means that there are no proprietary formats to trip you up and charge you money for something that can't be easily manipulated with a programming language, no undocumented proprietary formats.

Accessible. We need more tools like processing, TUIO, etc. and means for user generated frameworks from all skill levels, be it comp sci, visual artist, or educator.

The Open Web is a system that does not favor one technology or platform over any other.  It is solely based on web standards.  An open web works the same no matter how you access it.  

Open Web means a internet not needing plugins and prop. software to use anything on the web. Build in support for music, videos and apps, that anyone can get the source to and use freely.

It means being able to hack random cool stuff by looking at how other people did it, and at the moment that means SVG, Canvas, and long poll ajax.

Open web, to me, means that developers can produce content without having to pay licensing fees or buy expensive development environments. Interoperating web applications is in there somewhere as well

No proprietary formats or technology. Technologies exist as standards that are open to anyone who wants to implement them. That way, apps can communicate with each other without artificial barriers.

It means a semantically clear web, where anybody can remix and reuse data from any site easily and for free.
