this is the very rough agenda brainstorm for the hybrid summit. if you stumble on it, please feel free to share your ideas.
Goals for the day
Primary
- Develop compelling story and common language that describes the hybrid phenomenon. Start by sharing info about how each of our orgs works.
- Swap skills and techniques that help us operate our hybrid orgs better on a day to day. Eg. revenue models, community management, org structure.
- Look for lightweight ways to share ideas and grow the hybrid org concept on an ongoing basis.
Outputs
What specific things do we want to take away?
- General: summarize the best thinking from the day, and share it with the world. Includes inviting some journalists for the last part of the day.
- Short videos of final presentations that synthesize key ideas and topics
- Write up of key ideas (for use how and by whom?)
- Press coverage (who are we targeting?)
- Follow up task list re: who is helping whom with what later on?
What, where and when?

Agenda ideas braindump
- Opening buzz groups or opening circle to know who is in the room.
- Defining the terrain: interview w/ three very different orgs re: what does hybrid mean for them.
- Idea here is to scope the discussion and the questions we want to answer without speechifying. The three orgs should represent diverse types of hybrids -> different revenue models, etc.
- Mark interviews and then questions from the group. Contributors -> Mitchell, Johnathan Greenblatt, whoever comes from PLOS.
- Agenda review: summarize goals and outputs we want, be really concrete about what we want participants to produce
- We also want to do something unconferency here re: topics people want to cover so that we can use these to drive small groups
- Something that gives an overview of the different hybrid models in the room, bring them to life w/ specific org models
- Could be speedgeek, lightning talk or pecha kecha. Main thing is that we have the right focusing question for this.
- Small group sessions. Defined by the group and focused on tough and most interesting questions. Likely topics:
- 'nicholas: really need help w/ these questions. they will be key
- How do you explain your org model to the world? Does it matter?
- How do you explain your org model and mission to the government?
- How do you take advantage of the competitive edge that having a mission, public benefit focus, and open process offer?
- How do you find revenue models that help drive mission? When do you turn money down?
- Where do you get investment needed to scale and build products that compete in the market?
- What would have to change to make creating hybrid orgs easier? How can funders better understand the opportunity?
- How do you build and maintain a strong community?
- How do you balance community contribution and quality product?
- How do you recruit and retain top notch people?
- What else?
- Could gather topics in advance instead of on the spot, or mix of both.'
- Lunch interview or debate that is super thought provoking. Mitch? Kevin Kelly?
- More small groups based on questions above.
- Lightning talk report outs on most interesting ideas coming out of small groups.
- What's the spec here? What do we want people to produce?
- Some kind of wrap up? Identifying next steps if any? Offering things to do for each other?
Other random ideas:
- Org who is having tough time getting investment to scale interviewed by foundations and VCs, or vice versa.
- Well known org coming forward w/ genuine challenge and asking for advice from peers or from whole group. Being vulnerable. Who would this be?
- Some concrete problem solving sessions. If could come up w/ the right ones, could really work.
- Someone a little bit on the outside acting a bit as greek chorus throughout, saying what they are hearing and seeing and suggesting where to go deeper?
Resource People
People we definitely want to draw on as 'content' for the event:
- Mitch - Mitchell - Johnathan Greenblatt - Premal - Alberto? - Stephen DeBerry (interviewer and synthesizer?)
Should find a role for all these people if possible.
