Revision as of 19:19, 2 June 2009

this is a rough agenda brainstorm for the hybrid summit. will refine, evolve and cut down the number of sessions week of June 1. feedback encouraged.

What, where and when?

Mission+Market+Web Hybrid Summit - June 16, 2009. Breakdown of the day:

  • 9:30 - 3:30 - Hybrid orgs gather, swap ideas and strategize
  • 3:30 - 5:30 - Lightning talks and idea sharing w/ journalists and others
  • 6:30 - 8:30 - Dinner hosted by Mozilla

Location: new Mozilla offices at 650 Castro Street in Mountain View.

Goals for the day

  1. Develop compelling story and common language that describes the hybrid phenomenon. Start by sharing info about how each of our orgs works.
  2. Swap skills and techniques that help us operate our hybrid orgs better on a day to day basis. Eg. revenue models, community management, org structure.
  3. Look for lightweight ways to share ideas and grow the hybrid org concept on an ongoing basis.

Questions to be asking ...

... about running hybrid effectively:

  • How do you take advantage of the competitive edge that having a public benefit mission and open process offer?
  • How do you find revenue models that help drive mission? When do you turn money down?
  • Where do you get investment to scale and build products that compete in the market?
  • How do you explain your org model to the world? ... your community? ...the government?
  • How do you balance community contribution and quality product?
  • How do you recruit and retain top notch people?
  • What else?

... and more generally:

  • What are some of the differences amongst us?
  • What are the hard debates that lead to internal tension and challenges?
  • What are the decisions you made that most define your hybrid approach?
  • What's our strategy of getting the idea of hybrid orgs out into the world?
  • Where can we help each other most?
  • What else?

Ground rules

  • Be open and honest. Help others learn from you mistakes.
  • Ask others for advice. These are people who know what it's like.
  • Dig deep. Stay away from generic conversations and platitudes.
  • Cone of silence / confidentiality until 330pm. No blogging.
  • What else?

Session ideas

these are session ideas for feedback. we definitely can't do all of these. will winnow down week of June 1

Goal #1: Develop compelling story and common language that describes the hybrid phenomenon. Start by sharing info about how each of our orgs works.

  • Interactive: Intros Find five people you don't know. Ask them: what is your org trying to achieve in the world? and what makes your org a hybrid? whole group. 10 mins.
  • Interview panel: Hybrid orgs. What's great? What's hard? Interview w/ three very different hybrids to frame the discussion for the day. interviewer: xxx (?) / guests: Kiva, Mozilla, Public Library of Science? 20 mins.
  • Interactive: What surprises you? Opportunity to flag something that surprised you about another org in the room and then ask: why did you do that? how did it work? what were the challenges? whole group. 30 mins.

Goal #2: Swap skills and techniques that help us operate our hybrid orgs better on a day to day basis. Eg. revenue models, community management, org structure.

  • Small group discussions on how to run your hybrid better. People propose questions and organize groups unconference-style. breakout groups. 30 mins each? questions might include
    • How do you explain your org model to the world? ... your community? ...the government?
    • How do you take advantage of the competitive edge that having a public benefit mission and open process offer?
    • How do you find revenue models that help drive mission? When do you turn money down?
    • Where do you get investment to scale and build products that compete in the market?
    • How do you balance community contribution and quality product?
    • How do you recruit and retain top notch people?
  • Alternate take on small groups: present a challenge your org is having and then ask a small group of peers for advice.
  • Interview panel: Investing in hybrid orgs Hybrid org leader interviews three foundations / VCs about challenges of investing in hybrids. 'interviewer: xxx (?) / guests: Knight, Surdna, Mitch? 30 mins.
  • Interview panel: Creating the right legal structures. Discussion of the challenges of coming up with structure, including being recognized as a public benefit org by government. interviewer: xxx (?) / guests: xxxx? 30 mins.
  • Interview panel: Money meets mission: how to pick the right revenue sources? Discussion of how you identify revenue sources that match and drive public benefit mission. Where have people succeeded? Where have they gotten stuck? interviewer: xxx (?) / guests: Public Radio Exchange, Public Library of Science, Mozilla? 30 mins.
  • Coaching clinic: Confessions of a young hybrid org. Participatory Culture Foundation outlines current challenges and asks three peers to come on stage to offer advice. Getting coaching: Nicholas Reville, PCF. Coaches: DonorsChoose.org, Benetech, Kiva???. 30 mins.

Goal #3: Look for lightweight ways to share ideas and grow the hybrid org concept on an ongoing basis.

  • Stickies on the wall: Write ideas for follow up and future work on stickies throughout the day. Post them on the wall.
  • Synthesis session: Closing circle before the 330 journalist time slot where we look at the stickies on the wall and discuss things that we'd like to follow up on.

Info sharing goal: Summarize the best thinking from the day, and share it with the world.

  • this is the least baked section / needs lots of help
  • Prepare lightning talk report outs that we can do after 330pm when journalists arrive. Videotape these.
    • Really need to think in advance: what are the most interesting topics and what is the spec for the report out?
  • Small group sessions: Something where people reflect on the day, possibly draw a picture or make a slide deck. Something to summarize the state of hybrids, the big questions, etc. that we can share w/ each other and the world.
