How to ask questions on IRC

Before asking a question, you should ask a smart question.

Next remember that there are better places than IRC to ask questions! Writing out the questions ahead of time allows you to think about the various issues ahead of time before taking up the valuable time of the people on IRC. It also leaves a history of the question or problem that might save someone in the future from asking the same question.

  1. First try the newsgroups.
  2. If you can't ask the question publicly, create yourself a email account at the many different online services that provide anonymity, then go to (1).
  3. If you really can't use the newsgroup, you can try emailing the module owners of your area of interest.

If you must ask on IRC, remember:

  1. Try to look it up before asking on IRC.
  2. Be understanding if people on IRC don't have time to answer.
  3. Keep in mind that people in IRC are often busy working, or in a meeting, and may not be able to respond quickly.
  4. Be mindful of someone's time when interacting on IRC, and ask focused, to the point questions, and try to think about responses before reacting.
