You can contribute to Thunderbird by:
- Spreading Thunderbird
- QA Testing - Test Thunderbird code.
- Extension development
- Writing a patch for Thunderbird.

Thunderbird code resides in "mozilla/mail", "mozilla/mailnews", "mozilla/toolkit", and "mozilla/chrome" directories.
