* The invention of the Internet is pretty incredible: in early 1960s it was the proposed solution for how to keep communications alive in the US in the chance that key cities were nuked by the Soviets.  I.E. decentralized, fail-safe communication (the line of communication could just re-route around the dead cities). Everyone probably knows the general gist of it but the details are fascinating and I highly recommend that book.
