Welcome to the SUMO Buddies Wiki pages

Who are the Buddies?

SUMO Buddies are experienced contributors who want to help those new to SUMO and are not afraid of making new friends ;-).

Buddies come in two "flavours":

Community Buddies

They make sure that new contributors in SUMO feel welcome and provide them with assistance. Community Buddies make sure new contributors know how SUMO works and are aware of the four contribution areas (CA) within SUMO (forum support, Army of Awesome, KB writing, KB l10n) and that they choose the most appropriate ones, based on their interests and skills.

They are the stalwart stewards of the SUMO community. Their motto is "No New Contributor Left Behind".

Active Community Buddies

Mentor Buddies

They are specialists in one or more CA, and mentor the new contributors, helping them find the right contacts and tools, solve problems and gain more detailed knowledge about the new contributor's CA of choice.

They are the main sources of information about their expert domain. Their motto is "Knowledge Is Power, Power Is Responsibility".

You don't have to wait until that day, though - come on over any day of the week!

Where can I read the notes from the Buddy meetings?

You can find the complete list of meetings and links to all notes here: https://etherpad.mozilla.org/sumo-buddy-meetings

So, to find our notes for any given day, please use the following URL format: https://etherpad.mozilla.org/buddyprogram-YYYY-MM-DD (for example: https://etherpad.mozilla.org/buddyprogram-2014-09-19)

Why would I want to become a Buddy?

Good question :-) We want to make sure you have the opportunity to cooperate with us in making the SUMO community a better, friendlier space for everyone, and in the meantime....

  • Improve your interpersonal skills
  • Learn how to strengthen your community presence
  • Learn how to be an even better mentor
  • Develop your knowledge of all things related to Mozilla
  • Meet like-minded, open-source-positive people from all over the world (and your area)
  • Get swag, attend events, be happy and open-source!

How can I become a Buddy?

It's not hard, but it will require quite a lot of dedication to the SUMO Community.

Depending on your preferred method of being a Buddy, you can choose between...

Becoming a Community Buddy

  • Do you have great communication skills?
  • Are you naturally driven to help others?
  • Have you been an active member of the SUMO community for at least 6 months?
  • Can you visit the Contributor forums at least 4 times a week?
  • Can you visit the #buddies channel at least 3 times a week?
  • Can you help at least 2 new contributors a week?

... if your answer is YES to all the above questions, join #buddies and introduce yourself!

Becoming a Mentor Buddy

  • Do you have great communication skills?
  • Are you naturally driven to help others?
  • Have you been an active member of the SUMO community for at least 6 months?
    • Have you visibly contributed to at least one of the following: Army of Awesome, KB documentation, KB L10n, or Support Forum?
    • Can you share the links to your contributions?
  • Do you have sufficient experience in your contribution area(s) to share them with others, less knowledgeable members of the community?
  • Are you ready to work with one or more new contributors in your area of contribution and help them become great at it?

... if your answer is YES to all the above questions, join #buddies or visit our Discourse forums and introduce yourself!
