/>TLDR: these Webmaker Community calls are growing and evolving.
How do we scale up for success?
Need your ideas for optimizing these calls in 2013 --
in terms of audience, infrastructure and content

Global Game Jam : http://globalgamejam.org/

Wanna make @mozgames? Global Game Jam (#ggj13) is happening on the 25-27th of January in more than 300 locations in 63 countries. Game On is sponsoring a bunch of events https://gameon.mozilla.org/en-US/events/& and we also have a diversifier (secret for now, will be announced Jan 21)

1) AUDIENCE. Who are Webmaker community calls for?

Webmaker has three core audiences:

1) MAKERS

What is a diversifer?http://archive.globalgamejam.org/wiki/achievements-diversifiers

2) MENTORS

3) BUILDERS (the community building Webmaker)

More Game Jams coming in January; Hive Game Jam during Indiecade East, Bocoup Game Jam, Kenya, NYU Games & Innovation Lab.

These calls are primarily intended for BUILDERS and MENTORS

There are lots of individual *team* calls for builders (product team, badges, engagement & comms, etc.) Listed here: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Webmakers/Project_Community_Calls

Competition Entries

Getting our first entries (39 so far) https://gameon.mozilla.org/en-US/entries/all/

But this is the only *60 min* each week where we're *all* together

Staff Picks :)

Robocybe http://moka.co:443/

Slime Volley https://gameon.mozilla.org/en-US/entries/slime-volley/

Q: What do BUILDERS need more of from these calls?

e.g., Co-ordinating. Working open. Sharing best practises. Making sure the most important stuff is on everyone's radar.

Q: What do MENTORS want from these calls?

INFRASTRUCTURE

What are the TOOLS we need to make these calls run smoothly?

1) Reliable audio. Must-have. Killer functionality: mute all lines.

2) Interactive agenda + easy chat.

Back in the day, switching from wiki to etherpad made HUGE difference in these calls

BUT: current etherpad set-up doesn't scale. How do we make it more stable?

Important context:

According to @dascher: Mozilla is looking at implementing an etherpad replacement (based on etherpadlite). Timelines for this? Next steps?

Should MoFo run and maintain *our own* instance of Etherpad Lite? Would that help?

What other tools exist? What are examples of how other calls do it?

Q: short term: what are our immediate next steps on making Etherpad more stable?

NOTES & COMMENTS

Q: long term: can Etherpad scale to meet our needs for 75+ / 100+ 200+ / people? What other set-ups should we consider?

QUESTIONS

3) Screen sharing. Not essential, but nice to have. Want to show off killer DEMOS and prototypes.

Dirty little secret: 90% of the time we have issues with screen sharing, it's because people *don't show up early!*

The Geneva Convention for Humane Treatment of AV Personnel applies: no early, no demo.

Q: right now we're using WebEx, because it integrates easily with our audio. Are there other tools we should look at?

Q. What kinds of *content* do you want to see more of in these calls in Q1 / Q2?

e.g.,

Demos. I love having at lease one awesome demo in each call.

Board slides. I like how these lay out strategy and planning.

What's a "tagged feed?" /

How do I make sure only the right stuff from my blog appears on Planet Webmaker?

You may write about lots of different stuff on your personal blog -- not all of which you want to appear on Planet Webmaker.

We use tagged feeds to help with this. So that only posts that you tag with "Mozilla" or "Webmaker," for example, show up on Planet Webmaker.

“How do I figure out what the URL for my tagged feed is?”

If you’re using WordPress, there’s helpful documentation on this here: http://codex.wordpress.org/WordPress_Feeds#Finding_Your_Feed_URL

A “Mozilla” tagged feed might look something like this: http://openmatt.wordpress.com/tag/mozilla-2/feed/

Should I be posting to Planet Mozilla as well? What's the different between Planet Mozilla and Planet Webmaker?

Planet Mozilla = the entire Mozilla universe. Evolving Webmaker Community Calls (Matt) (10 mins)

TLDR: these Webmaker Community calls are growing and evolving.
How do we scale up for success?
Need your ideas for optimizing these calls in 2013 --
in terms of audience, infrastructure and content

    • 1) AUDIENCE. Who are Webmaker community calls for?
      • Webmaker has three core audiences:
        • 1) MAKERS
        • 2) MENTORS
        • 3) BUILDERS (the community building Webmaker)
      • These calls are primarily intended for BUILDERS and MENTORS
    • INFRASTRUCTURE
      • What are the TOOLS we need to make these calls run smoothly?
        • 1) Reliable audio. Must-have. Killer functionality: mute all lines.
        • 2) Interactive agenda + easy chat.
          • Back in the day, switching from wiki to etherpad made HUGE difference in these calls

          • BUT: current etherpad set-up doesn't scale. How do we make it more stable?
            • Important context:
              • According to @dascher: Mozilla is looking at implementing an etherpad replacement (based on etherpadlite). Timelines for this? Next steps?
              • Should MoFo run and maintain *our own* instance of Etherpad Lite? Would that help?
              • What other tools exist? What are examples of how other calls do it?
                • Q: short term: what are our immediate next steps on making Etherpad more stable?

                • Q: long term: can Etherpad scale to meet our needs for 75+ / 100+ 200+ / people? What other set-ups should we consider?

        • 3) Screen sharing. Not essential, but nice to have. Want to show off killer DEMOS and prototypes.
          • Dirty little secret: 90% of the time we have issues with screen sharing, it's because people *don't show up early!*
          • The Geneva Convention for Humane Treatment of AV Personnel applies: no early, no demo.
        • Q: right now we're using WebEx, because it integrates easily with our audio. Are there other tools we should look at?

      • CONTENT
    • GENERAL QUESTIONS / SUGGESTIONS?

    • How to Get Involved:
      • Next steps:
        • publish your feedback as a blog post
      • Add it to a new Webmaker Community call roadmap
        • Report back on next week's call
      • Want to get involved? Get in touch with @OpenMatt. Or stick around after this call.
