Vision

Improve impact of — and value to — Mozilla Mentor Networks through two initiatives: Hive Global and Webmaker Clubs.

Expand Hive Global

  • Grow to 20 Hive Learning cities. Foster local, innovative communities of teachers, mentors and organizations who teach web & digital literacy. Target Asia and Africa (e.g. Bangalore and Mombasa).
  • Launch the Hive Global. Dedicate a team to spread and deepen the Hive Learning model. Focus on: i) growing Hive cities, ii) participating in MacArthur Foundation Cities of Learning, iii) setting up a Hive Lab, iv) developing a set of Hive badges for mentors, v) documenting the model.
  • Build how Hive sets the table for Webmaker people, product and programs to thrive. Further develop Hive network channels towards better Webmaker engagement. Learn from Hive Pittsburgh's Digital Corps and Hive Bangalore's Webmaker Clubs. Deep collaboration with other Mozilla communities (e.g. Science Lab, Policy and ReMo).

Develop Webmaker Clubs

  • More people teaching the web with Webmaker -- going further, engaged longer, and mentoring better. Focus on retention and longer arcs. Get more teaching expertise into the community. Explore opportunities with mobile and campaigning at the edges.
  • Webmaker 'Clubs'. (may not be branded that). Package activities to teach the web over a period of time. Pair with badges, support and leadership opportunities. Leverage for innovation and iteration on the ground.
  • Structure engagement and seek high-level contribution. Provide better systems and value to lead users to sustain their contributions. Direct professional development to help mentors deliver transformative learning experiences. Shape the product with their experiences. Deep collaboration with other Mozilla communities (e.g. Science Lab, Policy and ReMo).

Develop Web Literacy curriculum

  • Develop free+open curriculum including teaching kits and assessments that anyone can use. Building off our web literacy work, create a robust "textbook" that helps learners develop 21st century digital skills. Build in consultation with broader mentor community, key partners.
  • Provide mentors with a framework to recognize and grow learners' digital skills & competencies. Ship a complete offering that could stand alone and be used to recognize & certify learners' development.
  • Backed by a strong theory of career readiness. Ship position papers and supporting documentation that links web literacy with increased college and career readiness.

Before & After

  • Before. Where do we stand now?
    • 10 cities who share a model for connected learning and have been a testbed of some of Webmaker's best ideas & ground game. Lots of success to harvest and grow.
    • 5K contributors who share their web skills, hosted an event, remixed a teaching kit, or otherwise took action to teach the web. It's quite ad-hoc and no clear path for them individually and as a group.
  • After. What this will look like in Dec 2015?
    • 20 cities are buzzing with Hive Learning. They are networked, innovative and providing a sophisticated ground game to teach web & digital literacy.
    • 5K+ Webmaker Mentors are better networked and teaching with higher quality over longer periods of time. They have a strong group identity with local context, they are innovating on how to teach the web, and they are active in a blended way (online & offline).
    • We have shipped a robust, stand-alone Web Literacy curriculum that can be used to teach+assess 21st century skills. We are using this throughout our mentor networks.

KPIs

  • Ground game. Sustain and grow Hive Learning Networks & Webmaker mentors. Experiment with clubs to evolve ground game.
    • Increase % of active users who earn a second contribution badge (Q1)
  • Quality of teaching. Badges to mentors and educators who demonstrate ability to teach effectively and creatively
    • Increase # of Webmaker and Hive educator badges each month (Q2).
  • Networked. Through partnerships and community organizing mentors will have a bigger reach and more rewarding experience.
    • Increase % of users active in online Webmaker groups (Q2) [or: users who contribute as part of a partnership]

These KPIs will inform our work through Q2. Afterward, we'll revisit and look at measuring i) quality of learning and ii) impact.
