Mozilla Student Reps Program

Overview

The Mozilla Project comprises many contributors from many places with even more skill sets and perspectives. Given its diversity and scope, getting involved in Mozilla Community can seem challenging to newcomers. The Mozilla Student Reps program exists to empower young people and students with the tools and resources needed to advocate for Mozilla's mission and projects. As a Student Rep, you are granted opportunities to learn, lead, and grow Mozilla's influence and contributor base to the edges.

What is a Student Rep?

A Mozilla Student Rep is any student helping to spread Firefox and the Mozilla Mission through campaigns and projects, both at their schools and in their local communities. Student Reps also help new contributors get involved with different functional areas across the Mozilla Project.

Student Reps educate people about open source software with passion, resourcefulness and creativity. They help the Mozilla community accomplish great things and they’re active in demonstrating the many benefits of Firefox and other Mozilla products.

How is the program structured?

The Student Reps program is situated within the Mozilla Reps program (ReMo) to offer Student Reps a clear path to become official representatives of Mozilla in their region. Student Reps and Mozilla Reps will work closely on a regional level to accomplish goals and advance as contributors. Click here to read more about structure and governance within the Student Reps and Mozilla Reps programs.

Background and Re-launch

The Mozilla Student Reps program was largely dormant since 2010, lacking resources necessary to support members and grow. In 2011, a Community Manager for Students was brought on to gather feedback, re-launch the program and coordinate its activities going forward. With its official re-launch in December 2011, Mozilla Student Reps will build on its [ReMo/Student_Reps/History|previous success] as well as grow to support even more contributors and projects in the future. Updated regularly on this wiki are the projects, toolkits, channels, planning, and frequently-asked-questions associated with the Student Reps program.

Channels + Resources

The program utilizes a variety of channels and resources to engage and support Student Reps and their supporters.

Website

The Student Reps website is the main resource for program. It's comprised of four pages -- Home, Projects, Marketing, Highlights, and Help -- to guide contributors through the program's main functions.

  1. Home - Summarizes Student Reps program; lists key links; features relevant projects and promotions
  2. Projects - Details four key contributor areas; lists suggestions for getting involved at school; cites resources across the Mozilla Project.
  3. Marketing Describes tools and tips for leading marketing projects and activities; lists different channels through which contributors can connect with other Mozillians and promote Mozilla.
  4. Highlights - Features contributors and events; member incentives; a contact form.
  5. Help - Runs through a list of frequently asked questions (FAQ) about the Student Reps program.

Social Media

The Student Reps program has a dedicated Facebook page and a Twitter account it shares with other student-related opportunities at Mozilla. These channels are updated daily with student-related content, as well as updates from across the Mozilla Project.

Students contributors and others use the Student Reps Network on Ning to discuss projects, plan events, and stay in touch with each other.

Newsletter

The Student Bulletin newsletter broadcasts program updates, regional snapshots and events, and special offers to all who sign-up.

SWAG + Presentation Materials

The Student Reps program, like its (big) sister program Mozilla Reps, will provide contributors with a full compliment of presentation materials and SWAG, some of which will be branded with Student Reps-specific design assets. Some materials to be offered include:

  • presentation slide templates
  • starter swag packs

The Firefox Brand Toolkit will continue to be leveraged as the go-to resource for design assets and brand guidelines.

Get Involved

The Student Reps program strives to engage and activate student contributors across the Mozilla Project. In its initial phase, the program will focus on growing membership and standing up the volunteer organization infrastructure. Please feel welcome to tune in to the following channels and provide feedback, references, and contacts to make the program stronger.
