Partner with Mozilla in our 2012 summer learning campaign
Work with us to help the world learn to code this summer. Add your education, coding or webmaking programs into Mozilla's Summer Code Party.
It's all about open web technologies + maker spirit, helping people make something amazing – and publish and share it through the open web.
The goal: teach everyday people around the world the basics of coding and webmaking by making and building together, through a mix of big and small events, tools and resources. And we want to build a global network of instructors and partners along the way.
What's already planned?
(under construction. more soon)
- Mozilla will be building tools to facilitate group-based learning through making, organizing events around the world, and building an infrastructure to support a global campaign.
- Ladies Learning Code will be...
- Young Rewired State will be...
- Many more organizations are coming on board weekly. Have a look at who we're in discussion with.
- We want to add you. Let's add your open web training, webmaking or coding courses, tools or events.
What will Mozilla provide?
- Promotion and profile-raising for your events. We'll showcase your events on our Summer Campaign web site (coming soon). And we'll include you in our social media, press outreach, and communications with the global Mozilla community.
- A shared summer platform. Your events will appear – and be searchable – on our global map of campaign events. And we'll provide ways for people to share what they made and learned.
- A global weekend of action. Participate in our big weekend of making and learning on June 23 & 24. By all pushing together at one time, we can expand all of our reach, and increase the profile of what we're all doing together.
- Assistance in creating learning programs and opportunities. We can help turn your expertise, technology or mentors into learning programs and opportunities.
Global Weekend of Action: June 23 & 24.
What's going to happen?
- Our goal (it's an ambitious one) is 10,000 events across the world, with people teaching & making on the Web all over the world.
- People at events will be able to see what others are doing in real time, with a gallery of shareouts and updates on progress
- We're all going to have a blast!
What's in scope? What kind of learning?
Open web technologies + maker spirit. It's all about "webmaking" -- teaching coding and webmaking basics through practical, hands-on projects. With a big emphasis on the open web. For example...
- Inviting your team or community members to act as mentors and volunteers. Have volunteers mentor people at small workshops and learning events.
- Make your blog more awesome. Tweak your Tumblr or WordPress blog by customizing the HTML and CSS in your templates, using Mozilla tools and how tos to make it easier.
- Make a new webpage. Just started something with your friends (a band, club, etc.)? Use Mozilla tools to create a web presence that you really *made* for yourselves.
- Make an interactive video. Take any video on the web and supercharge it by adding pop-ups, commentary and interactivity, with tools like Mozilla Popcorn.
- Host your own informal teach-in. Invite teens to gather around a kitchen table and do a Hackasaurus mission, sharing what you make together.
- "Webify" something. Take a story or blog post and mark it up using HTML.
- Go deeper. Create a killer app, new web site, or web-based game.
How do we get started? What's the next step?
- Get in touch to let us know what you're planning. email our Summer Campaign Organizing & Partnership lead, Ben Simon. (bsimon at mozillafoundation dot org)
- Participate in the June 23 Day of Action.
- Get in touch with Ben and we'll work together to figure out the best way for you to plug in.
- Add your events to our web site and map.
- The event platform will be ready in May, well before the kickoff weekend. We'll be sure to keep you posted as it moves along!
- Spread the word to your community. We'll be putting up a page with a Summer Campaign flyer, sample tweets, and other resources to help spread the word.
