Participation/Campus-Campaign

About

The Campus Campaign is an initiative of the Participation Team that aims to mobilize teams of students to affect real change in the area of privacy on their campuses and communities.

We believe there is a direct relationship between empowered students and social and societal change around privacy.

We are still in the early stages of development and will be updating this wiki page as the campaign develops.

Mission

We will bring students together to create a world where people are empowered, safe and independent in their online lives. We believe empowered students are uniquely capable of driving real personal and societal change.

Campaign Principles

  • solve big problems
  • channel our energy
  • inspire others
  • do it together

How We Will Achieve This Mission

We will empower students to create change through three Impact Areas:

  • Change Behaviour. Use education and awareness to change the way people understand and protect their data online. Teams will organize and facilitate workshops that will deliver powerful insights about privacy and give people the tools to build the habits and behaviours to keep them safe online.
  • Change Policy. Start a movement on your campus! Investigate the state of local privacy issues and gather support for laws that protect privacy the right way. Together you’ll run a campus-wide survey to identify and assess the privacy issues on your campus, and have access to tools and training to contribute to local policy battles.
  • Change Technology. Build new add-ons that change and challenge the way people access and understand encryption. Work together to hack directly on Firefox products by tackling challenging private browsing and tracking bugs to make Firefox even more powerful.

Unique theories of change under each impact area

i. People are not powerless. If individuals know the risks and the simple actions [tools/habits] with the biggest impact, they can take charge of their own privacy.

ii. Institutional policies impact our lives in seen and unseen ways.

iii. Privacy should be built into the program.

Approach

We will be recruiting "Campus Teams" or 2-5 students who will work together to start campaigns on their campuses.

We will provide training, resources, and support around three areas of privacy related activity.

Get Involved

There are two ways to get involved:

  1. Apply to Become a Campus Team. Privacy is a big issue and none of us can tackle it alone. Each of these impact areas will require a number of different skills and talents to get the job done. Build a diverse team of university and college students from your campus to tackle 2-3 of the impact areas above. Here are some skills you might want to think about as you’re putting together your team: event managing/coordination, marketing/promotion, development/programming, recruiting, facilitating/presenting, researching, community building. Applications open March 9th.
  2. Apply to Become a Local Coach We believe empowered students are uniquely capable of driving personal and societal change around privacy but they’ll expert support to succeed. Sign-up to become a Local Coach and we’ll connect you with up to 5 campus teams who you’ll support, train, and mentor. Successful applicants will be organized, responsible, and have a passion for working with young people.
