Terminologies

Firewall

A firewall is like a long wall around your network covered in doors, each door is a "port" in the firewall. Each door has a number (the port number) and a rule, the rule decides what is allowed to come through that particular door and where it should be going once it comes through (which computer on your network the information should be sent to). Antivirus scans files that are already on your computer and helps to indicate which ones are viruses as well as detecting when a new virus enters the system.

Pop-up Ads

Pop-up ads are advertisments that show up in a new browser window. Popups are generally irritating and sometimes harmful to the system.

Cookies

An internet cookie is a small file that a website creates on your machine. Cookies are used to store data pertaining to how you use the site. For example, if you log into facebook, facebook will create a cookie indicating that you're logged in. That way, when you return to facebook later, you're still logged in.
