Some working lines and experiences from Barcelona Festival 2010 A few general things:
- think at volunteers as at Festival's core community;
- volunteers should feel empowered and identified w/ Mozilla's (and Festival's) mission;
- pre-event and post-event volunteers engagement - volunteers are the people keeping-up the post-festival momentum;
- volunteers are building part of the Festival, offers an updated documentation and howto's;
Pre-event engagement
- Regular monthly MozPubs (around a specific topic? open video / augmented reality, (open) data journalism and challenges etc.);
- A few blogposts (but mostly encourage others to write about the Festival topic);
- 2 - 3 weeks before, start regular meet-ups w/ volunteers, establish tasks and priorities together;
- help making creative swag, materials. Share "build a Festival experience" w/ participants through materials.
During Festival
- 1 or 2 volunteers per tent (folks should feel free to choose the tent they are interested in). Volunteer and participate in the same time.
- Live-blogging (every tent could have one or more bloggers. Also, bloggers should feel comfortable w/ the activity/topic).
- Document sessions.
After Festival
- Participate actively to post-festival feedback and Drumbeat calls;
- Build a backpack (how to make a Festival document);
- Keep-up the momentum. Help facilitating post-Festival local events (Hackasaurus Hack Jams, Buttercamps, etc.).
- Build a local community of web makers. Inspire others to join the movement.
- Those were the phases we worked through in Barcelona. Now, the challenge for London would be to improve this, accelerate processes and grow the number and involvement of volunteers **
