Foundation:Planning
This is a hub page for Mozilla Foundation planning activities. Right now, it's focused on the Foundation's Vision and Roadmap process, which is taking place in late 2008 and early 2009.
Overview
Building on Mozilla project-wide 2010 goals process, Mozilla Foundation is undertaking a Vision and Roadmap development process. It's goals are:
- Articulate Foundation role and identity within the broad Mozilla community (long term)
- Define new programs that advance Mozilla Foundation mission (medium term)
- Catalyze community and get good ideas rolling along the way (starts now!)
This process is related specifically to activities undertaken directly by the Foundation. It does not replace or compete with the 2010 goals process. Rather, it will draw on 2010 goals and other inputs as a way to shape the future programs and focus of the Foundation.
Vision and Roadmap Process
The Mozilla Foundation Vision and Roadmap will be developed by staff, board and community members between November 2008 and March 2009. The rough process looks like this:
The idea is to put ideas out there early, iterate alot and try things out as we go. Slides overviewing the process are here.
The trying things out part will be critical: the Foundation will do or fund small experiments in each of the main areas covered in its strawman plan. This will make it possible to both learn and get good ideas rolling even before the plan is done.
Strawmen and Scratchpads
In order to move fast and iterate, we will need to float ideas early and often. These links to strawman plans and scratchpad pages are meant to help:
- Foundation 2010 goals
- Main Program Strawman
- Open Web Evangelism
- Community Health
- Accessibility
- Education
- Research
All of these pages should be consider draft. They are intended as works in progress.
Experiments in Play
These are experiments, events and small projects that people are already doing as a way to test ideas that could become part of Foundation programs.
- MozCamp+ Victoria Goal -> develop a template for low-cost, low-effort local Mozilla events that include both community building (people already involved in Mozilla) and outreach (people who might want to engage with Mozilla).

Background and Input
There was been alot of conversation about Mozilla Foundation's role, identity and goals during 2008. These conversations will be used as the main inputs for the first 'strawmen' plans that the Foundation team floats.
