We are back! Kickin' some Webmaker butt in 2013 (Ryan)
Interviews with Webmaker Mentors: What did we learn? (Laura + Michelle) (5 min)- Links and context:
- <a href="http://www.zythepsary.com/techie/the-mentor-community-says/">http://www.zythepsary.com/techie/the-mentor-community-says/</a>
- <a href="https://wiki.mozilla.org/Webmaker/Teach">https://wiki.mozilla.org/Webmaker/Teach</a>
- (
- Last month a group of us at Mozilla scheduled a series of interviews with "mentors" in the Webmaker community
- These are people actively participating in running webmaking events, trying out ideas, giving feedback, etc.
- We talked to about 80 people over the course of two weeks.
- Key Learnings / Recommendations from those interviews:
- (summarized from Laura's blog post <a href="http://www.zythepsary.com/techie/the-mentor-community-says/">http://www.zythepsary.com/techie/the-mentor-community-says/</a> )
- 1) The "Making is Learning" narrative needs to surface quickly
- a lot of people have been trying to understand how their “thing” fits in the Webmaker initative
- e.g., if their thing isn’t explicitly about web technologies, or based in the physical, rather than the digital world, is Webmaker still for me? What's in, what's out?
- Need to communicate more clearly the pedagogy we use and what's in scope for Webmaker
- We need clarity around what's in scope and what's out. If it has nothing to do with the web, not sure that it's actually in scope for Webmaker?
- 2) We need an ethos offering
- Webmaker is more than just code. When we run events, we talk about and embody the open web, collaboration, participation, digital citizenship.
- This is a message we need to surface better to the public via content.
- How can we reflect the ethos principles we champion in the Open Web Community in our content? How can someone learn about the tenets of openness via projects?
- 3) Mentors are asking for help understanding the soft skills of mentoring.
- Things like human development, facilitation techniques, and other practical resources for mentorship
- We need to create and curate a library of reusable resources (like slide decks, visuals, forms, etc) for mentors to use, hack and expand on.
- We have the beginning of this library on the Teach wiki. If you have resources, contribute them (just edit the wiki)! <a href="https://wiki.mozilla.org/Webmaker/Teach">https://wiki.mozilla.org/Webmaker/Teach</a>
- 4) People are having a hard time finding resources.
- Thus are lacking confidence to teach, run events, or design their own agendas
- Blame the mullet. We have lots of resources and documentation in the Mozilla wiki, but we don’t have a good way to surface things (yet).
- What we need to think about: ways to remix, reshuffle, and repost agendas and hacktivities. A Playlist for Mentors.
- Right now, the hacktivity kits are overflowing with details. But to pull more mentors in, they need a quick overview and a way to hack.
- 5) We need ways to matchmake
- Mentors want to figure out who else in their local area is working in this domain.
- Educators are looking for technologists and vice versa.
- Webmaker can and should help matchmake. Perhaps this is simply by using location tags in profiles, perhaps this is a more robust community outreach initiative. In any event, people who are active in a learning or technology community should reach out to other communities. There are tons of online communities that are open and accepting, and you never know when something you say or write will change the way someone else works, thinks or acts. So be social!

More Frequent Mozilla Emails in 2013! (Ben Simon) (5 Mins)- Links and context:
- Blog post: <a href="http://engagingopenly.wordpress.com/2012/12/20/2013-mozilla-email-program-evolution/">http://engagingopenly.wordpress.com/2012/12/20/2013-mozilla-email-program-evolution/</a>
- Basic idea: We want to send more frequent emails about a broader set of things than we did last year.
- So, not just around big actions (SOPA, Summer Code Party, MozFest) or list-growth campaigns (Webmaker Quiz), but also other things geared more toward story-telling, cultivation, and engagement. Still needs to be broadly appealing, but we would love your ideas!
- Some potential topics:
- –A description of a really cool event someone put on, that makes putting on an event sound cool and fun to others
- –a couple of new projects get added to Webmaker
- –The Webmaker gallery launches
- –Valentine’s Day Lovebomb
- –Something changes about Collusion
- –Firefox OS takes a noteworthy leap
- –Something else Product-Y that we can offer a bit of promo to
- –Awesome standalone graphics (like the Mozilla in 2012 graphic that we sent at the end of the year)
- –A community input pitch at a key moment
- –Etc.
- So, please add any ideas you have! The hope is to have this be roughly weekly, so the more thoughts the merrier. Add any ideas here:
- <a href="https://etherpad.mozilla.org/Tweets">https://etherpad.mozilla.org/Tweets</a>
- NOTES & COMMENTS
- Web Literacies - opportunities to level up and assistance in building out the framework / activities / badges
- QUESTIONS
- If we're going to send more frequent emails, can we make the emails shorter? Sometimes they feel a little long.
- Yes, as possible. Normally, data have shown that length isn't much of a factor. But, yes -- main idea is to have shorter, more frequent hits that tell a better story over the long run.

2013 Resolutions: Updating our Webmaker communications practises- In 2013, let's update and clean up our communications practises a bit :)
- Newsgroup mail and documentation coming on this, but in the mean time, heads up on two bits in particular:
- 1) Use #webmaker for IRC
- We're still using #foundation to talk about #webmaker stuff
- Let's make a point of using #webmaker instead (and wind down / discontinue #foundation)
- 2) Use #webmaker for all tweets
- Please use #webmaker for all Webmaker-related tweets

NON-VERBAL UPDATES:
From Monday's AllMoz meeting comes a one time chance to connect with the elusive and mysterious Mark Surman! It's a good chance to share our thoughts and interests with our MoCo friends. Here's what you need to know:
Fireside Chat with Mark Surman, Executive Director of the Mozilla Foundation.
We'll be recording a fireside chat with Mark Surman (Executive Director of the Mozilla Foundation) next week, where he will be answering your questions. The chat will be asynchronous to make sure no-one misses a beat (i.e. we'll collect questions beforehand, have them answered and recorded in a podcast format and then we'll host a follow-up discussion).
Add your questions here:- <a href="https://etherpad.mozilla.org/fireside-chat-with-mark">https://etherpad.mozilla.org/fireside-chat-with-mark</a>
