FAQ

How can I get gear for personal use?

Anyone can purchase items from gear.mozilla.org, the Official home of Mozilla Gear for personal use. For approved purposes and bulk orders, please continue to use the process described here.

Where can I go to buy gear for myself and my friends?

Gear.mozilla.org is your one stop shop for buying gear for yourself, friends, and family.

Who can file a bug for gear?

Any Mozillian can file a bug to request gear to recognize another Mozillian's efforts, as long as it fits within the approved use guidelines. Paid Mozilla staff can also request gear for other purposes (i.e. events, campaigns) through this bug.

Mozilla Reps should continue to rely on their current, well-established method for ordering gear for events and projects. And Mozillians who are not Mozilla Reps can request gear for events through a Rep in their area. When possible, please request gear from a Rep at least one month in advance.

Does my team have a budget for gear?

Currently each contribution area does not have a budget for gear. With this, you are welcome to order gear as it aligns with the ordering guidelines.

Is there special gear for new hires at Mozilla?

The People Team is spearheading the new hire onboarding program at Mozilla. As part of this program, individuals will be given directions on how to obtain a new hire package from the Gear Store. This package will include the *essential* Mozilla Gear that will help them get started! Look for more info on this topic from the People Team. For any questions, please email onboarding at mozilla dot com.

How do I decide what to send to a volunteer?

Great question! David Boswell and the Mozilla Stewards are currently working on metrics for what warrants gear being sent to a contributor. While it often varies by team, here are the conversion points they've developed to act as your guide when gifting gear. If your team has not already developed a series of conversion points, please reach out to David to help get you started!

Who can help me with a custom order?

We can! When you need to place a custom order, always fill out the 'Additional Comments' section of the traditional bug form with more information about your order and how we can be of help. (This includes an item not available in the store or customization work.)

What if I have a last minute request?

If you need gear within the week, please indicate so on the bug and we will assign the bug to a Space Gear Coordinator who will do their best to assist you from within your space.

Please note: Due to space limitations, gear is not available at every Mozilla space. More information about requesting gear from Mozilla spaces can be found here.

I want to help - how can I do that?

We'd love help - everything from items you would like to see added to the store, feedback on functionality, or help coordinating gear in spaces or for teams. Please email gearteam at mozilla dot com if you'd like to help.

More Information About gear.mozilla.org (Launching Fall 2014!)

Who receives the revenue from gear.mozilla.org?

Donations from Official Mozilla Gear will go to the Mozilla Foundation to further its mission to promoting openness, innovation, and opportunity on the Web.

Why does Mozilla Gear have limited inventory?

This is version 1.0 of gear.mozilla.org. We first wanted to feature items that would be most popular and most "evergreen." More items will be added over time. Stay tuned!

Why is Mozilla Gear in English only?

Mozilla is a global organization. As such, we know that translating gear.mozilla.org into languages other than U.S. English is very important. In order to launch Mozilla Gear as soon as possible, v1.0 of the site is in US-EN only. Additional languages will be added.

Will there be gear available in children's sizes?

Yes! Merchandise during launch will be in adult sizes only, but eventually we want to add child-sized clothing and other items for even the littlest Mozilla fans.

Can I be a store model sometime?

As we roll out new products for Mozilla Gear, we'll arrange additional photo shoots. We'll do our best to host these in different MozSpaces. Models are selected largely on a first come, first served basis, though we do need to ensure we have both women and men represented, along with a variety of clothing sizes.

Can I design an item for Mozilla Gear?

Yes! More information to come once the store has launched.

Can I suggest merchandise or marketing ideas for Mozilla Gear?

Yes! Add your brilliant ideas to the "Ideas for Gear" list.

Why does the Firefox t-shirt have a flat rate shipping fee?

During the business planning process for Mozilla Gear, many of our community members expressed a desire to have at least one item available to anyone, anywhere, for the same end-to-end price. Shipping costs can be very high -- $15 - $20 or more to ship one T-shirt to some locales around the globe. We're a global organization, we wanted the Firefox shirt to be accessible to more Mozillians around the world.

Do other items have the flat rate shipping fee?

No. Other items have the traditional shipping rates used by our vendor in their other stores.

How was the flat shipping rate calculated?

We looked at the geographic data of our user base, Mozillians.org, and donors, and came up with an expected global distribution for Mozilla Gear customers. We then took the average of the projected shipping rates and used that as the price point for the shipping on that shirt. We may adjust the one-rate shipping cost based on order volume and demand.

Why are most of the items sourced in the United States?

We had to pick places to start. If the bulk of purchases on different goods gain other geographic focus, we may move our suppliers to that part of the world. Our vendor manages those decisions on our behalf.
