Connected Devices Innovation Projects

We have identified a shortlist of experiments as our first group of projects in need of community participation to help us develop, test and evaluate. We’re excited to say that our first round of projects cover a wide range of potential solutions, as you can see below:

Current Projects

  • Project Sensor Web: The easiest path from sensors to open data for contributors to collaboratively build a detailed understanding of their living environments. We are launching a pilot project to build a crowd-sourced pm2.5 sensor network.
  • Project Haiku (formerly Project Smart Home): this project ambitions to improve people’s lives with technology that empowers them to focus on what matters most to them. People are bombarded with messages from all the people (and things) in their lives, they constantly check their phones so they don't miss the most important ones. The result: fear, anxiety, and stress.
  • Project Magnet is your own, personal user agent for the content that is around you.

Horizontal Projects

Teams are working in these areas that span horizontally across all of the projects in Connected Devices. Click on the links to see more details related to each project.

  • Metrics: Having the ability to instrument and determine how we measure success through data and metrics
  • Foxfooding: How we incorporate our community and early adopters at the start of all our projects
  • Research & Validation: Analyzing and validating against our users and community on what we build

Platform and Tools

  • Project Deep Speech/Project Pipsqueak

Closed Projects

  • Project Tablet: Exploring a simple, single-purpose tablet, completely dedicated to browsing the web.
  • Project Link: Personal user agent for the smart home, creating a web of things that is completely yours.
  • Smart Kitchen helps answer the question, "What's for dinner?" by identify your existing inventory, and then suggesting recipe options based on available refrigerator ingredients.
  • Project Cue makes use of an always-on voice-enabled smart screen device to set reminders and manage and keep track of activities, events, and to-do lists of family members.
  • Project Vaani: Project Vaani aims to bring a voice interface to the world of connected devices, using open and customizable technologies. We have stopped the Vaani-powered prototype called Vaani-Local and moved the technology building work under "Platform & Tools"
  • Smart Displays project is set out to explore the role of displays at home and understand what role displays might play in the future connected home and opportunities for innovation.
