Home Monitoring System

Vision

An affordable home monitoring system which gives users peace of mind without compromising on their privacy or locking them into a single provider.

Product

  • Existing white label gateway, camera and sensors running Mozilla WoT software
  • Access remotely from any device using the web
  • All private data stays in your home by default
  • Expand with additional existing sensors from multiple manufacturers
  • No recurring subscription costs

Key Use Cases

  • Securely view live video footage of your home directly over the web
  • Receive notifications when motion is detected or a door is opened
  • Play back recorded video clips of activity inside your home

Hypotheses

Value Proposition

  1. Most early adopters interested in home monitoring would prefer to pay for a system up front rather than pay for an ongoing subscription
  2. Most users would prefer to store private data like video footage of the inside of their home in the home itself rather than in a commercial cloud service
  3. Most users would prefer to have a single web interface to all the smart things in their home rather than a separate OS-specific app for each new device they buy
  4. Most users would prefer to buy a home monitoring system with the option of expanding it over time with devices from multiple manufacturers, rather than being limited to a single brand

Technical Feasibility

  1. Mozilla can build a home monitoring product by running our own WoT software on existing white label hardware
  2. By implementing support for standard ZigBee sensor profiles we can be compatible with a range of sensors from different manufacturers out of the box
