The following is a list of overall 2009 goals' for the Mozilla Foundation team:

  • Communications: Develop clearer messages and better systems to explain Mozilla's open web mission to a broad public.
  • Community: Work with MoCo and MoMo to strengthen and grow the Mozilla community, especially in key geographies.
  • Programs:Develop a small handful of programs that go beyond software as a way to promote Mozilla's mission (e.g. education).
  • Organization:Consolidate and strengthen the Foundation team, and develop a long term vision that clarifies Foundation's role within Mozilla.

A more detailed list of objectives and activities related to these goals is outlined below.

Specific objectives

A. Communications

2009 goal: Develop clearer messages and better systems to explain Mozilla's open web mission to a broad public.

  • Develop a communications program to educate and excite the public about the Open Internet.
  • Redesign www.mozilla.org to better communicate Mozilla's mission and provide an entry point into the Mozilla community.

B. Community

2009 goal: Work with MoCo and MoMo to strengthen and grow the Mozilla community, especially in key geographies.

  • MozCamp
  • Community Take Action Day
  • Build consensus around and roll out at least one project or initiative aimed at strengthening the existing Mozilla community.

    • One possiblity: Develop methods, mechanisms and software tools to obtain much more accurate and detailed ongoing Mozilla community metrics, as a basis for assessing community health and directing effort. This might include a self-service, electronically-queryable Community People website.

C. Programs

2009 goal: Develop a small handful of programs that go beyond software as a way to promote Mozilla's mission (e.g. education).

  • Develop a Mozilla Education program, including an effort to expand the impact of the Seneca / Mozilla course model.

  • Develop small scale research grant or fellowship program. Working closely with Labs, this program would make Mozilla an attrative place for researchers we discover to work on specific issues of broad interest to Mozilla and the Open Internet (e.g. security).

D. Organization

2009 Goal: Consolidate and strengthen the Foundation team, and develop a long term vision that clarifies Foundation's role within Mozilla.

  • Develop a long term vision and roadmap that clarifies the role of the Foundation within Mozilla. orange
    • Q3: Strategic review and vision discussion at MoFo board meeting.
  • Build nimble, effective Mozilla Foundation team, by clarifying roles and engaging in team bulding throughout 2009. green
    • Q2: Recruit Fundraising and Communications Manager.
    • Q2: Finalize 2008 performance reviews, and update performance review system.
    • Q?: Review benefits and salaries, including 401(k) accounts.
    • Q?: Formalize policies related to expenses and other issues that relate to employees.
  • Improve Mozilla's grant making process through better guidelines, coordination and information sharing.. green
    • Q2: Create a service in the Foundation to coordinate and support grant making across all Mozilla organizations.
    • Q2: Develop web pages that list grants made by all Mozilla organizations. Include whatever information we have for past years.
  • Consolidate and improve organizational systems, especially related to grant tracking, fundraising and internal communications. orange
