Common Questions and Answers

A quick explanation: this page started as a guide to common web analytics questions and answers and proved so handy its scope quickly evolved. I then moved it from the intranet "metrics" domain to this vanity URL within the public Wiki. We'll see how this page evolves further, but for now, it'll serve as a quick reference to all the common questions and answers I receive here at Mozilla.

Q: How much traffic does X page get?

Answer:

1. Click here: https://analytics.webtrends.com/

2. Select the profile your page lives in ("Mozilla.org/firefox (50% sample)" for most, "Product Pages (5% sample)" for What's New and First Run)

3. Under "Content" select "Pages"

4. Find your page in the list, or use the search feature

5. Note the timeframe - it's best to look at 1 month of data at one time. Also note that the Mozilla.org/firefox profile takes a 50% sample, so double raw numbers. The Product Pages take a 5% sample, so x20 your data.

Q: What page does someone go to after they view X page?

Answer:

1. Go to Analytics here

2. Under "Content" select the "Single level paths, forward" report

3. It's not clear, but you must click on the page name you're interested in to view the URLs of the path forward. Done!

Q: How many downloads/how much traffic did my campaign get?

Answer:

1. Click here: https://insight.webtrends.com/

2. Click on the "Mozilla.org/firefox (50% sample)" profile

3. Scroll down and select the Campaign Conversions report

4. Find your program. If you can't, try searching for it's name. Click on the "Campaign" Drilldowns to see all the campaigns going at one time.

5. Downloads will be under the "Firefox Downloads" column. Note this is for all versions of Fx. Done!

Q: What's our desktop download conversion?

Answer:

For en-US:

1. Go to the "Analytics" dashboard here

2. Within the Mozilla.org/firefox profile select the "Homepage Version /en-US/firefox/new/" report under "Default" to see the conversion from the /new page. To see the conversion from the /fx page view the "Homepage Version/en-US/firefox/fx" report.

3. Find the conversion rate in the "Conversion Rate" or "Firefox Download" column. This is for GA only. (To see the "Conversion Rate" already calculated within the report use the old "On Demand" dashboard - a bug has been filed that will soon show conversion % within both dashboards)

For non en-US

Use a this report and track a users path from the /new page (by your desired locale) to the Thank You page.

Q: How much traffic is What's New or First Run sending my marketing campaign?

Update: The referring URL report below seems to be inconsistent. This [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=683288] has been
filed to make this type of link tracking automatic.

Answer: To view referral traffic from our Product Pages, check the profile of the website your promo is sending people to. For example, if there is a promo for Aurora on the What's New page that links to mozilla.org/firefox/channels, you'd check the (Mozilla.org/firefox (50% sample), which is where the Aurora links to.

Within that report view the "Referral by Page URL" report which is under "Engagement Custom Reports". Find the page your promo is pointing to (in this example it goes to the /channel page - just search for the page name or page URL), and then click on that page to see its referring traffic.

Q: What Promos will be showing where, when on Mozilla.com?

Answer: There are a couple of handy schedules you can check to get these details.

What's New: Check the What's New Schedule.

The First Run: page is changed less often and usually has a smaller version of whatever is within the main promo spot on What's New.
Snippet Content: See this for snippet content.

Other Mozilla.com Site Content: Meaning the Fx user landing page and the download complete page. These pages are usually used to support major engagement launches. For campaigns like that, 1-off specs are created. Contact the program owner and they can provide you that link and/or other details.

Q: How do can I track my Engagement campaign?

Answer: If you plan to use webtrends tracking codes on your campaigns on even a semi-regular basis, you'll want to know how to track your campaigns in order to measure the affect they have. To learn how to do so, please setup a 1 hour meeting with me. It's best to do this face-to-face.

Q: How do I use Webtrends?

Answer: I'd be happy to give you a Webtrends walk-through! Please setup a 1 hour meeting with me. It's best to do this face-to-face.

Q. How do I get my new snippet live?

Answer: See this guide.

Q. How do I get my new site content or campaign live?

Answer: See this guide.

Q. What if there's a new conversion event I'm interested to track, that isn't being tracked already?

Answer: We track most main site conversion events like Firefox Desktop Download, Aurora Desktop Download, and more. However, when we release new products or experiences there may be new conversion events we're interested to track. In that case, custom tagging is needed to tell Webtrends this is a conversion event we care about. For those technical instructions follow these instructions.
