What is Rosetta Stone

Rosetta Stone is a language learning software that works through a technique called Dynamic Immersion. Dynamic Immersion works through the same process as when you first learned a language, through matching pictures to sounds and words.

Languages Offered

Arabic, Chinese, Dari, Dutch, English (American), English (British), Filipino (Tagalog), French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Indonesian, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Pashto, Persian (Farsi), Polish, Portuguese (Brasil), Russian, Spanish (Latin America), Spanish (Spain), Swahili, Swedish, Turkish, Urdu, Vietnamese.

Learning Commitment

In order to gain 1 Level of language mastery, Rosetta Stone requires a learning commitment of 5 - 7 hours a week for 8 - 10 months of active usage.

Rosetta Stone and Mozilla Learning Metrics

Mozilla has purchased 250 total licenses of Rosetta Stone language learning software. This limited amount is based on user metrics provided from the April 2012 - April 2013 cycle. 313 licenses were granted. 34 people were active users. 10 people completed 1 Level of language mastery.

Active and Inactive Usage

• Active usage of Rosetta Stone means that a learner is on track to complete 1 Level (of 3 Levels total) within the 8 to 10 month time period for mastery.

• Inactive usage of Rosetta Stone means that a learner has not used their learning their language for more an 60 days. Administrators will remove inactive licenses by asking inactive users to deactivate their accounts.

Who can sign up

• Mozilla paid and volunteer contributors who want to learn a language to help impact the success of the project by reducing language barriers.

• There are only 250 licenses available. 50 licenses are reserved for Mozilla Reps with the sign up process being first come, first serve. If Mozilla runs out of licenses, those seeking a license will be placed on a waiting list.

How to Sign up

• Paid Contributors sign up on Service Now.
  • 1. Go to category Software Request and click on Software Applications
  • 2. Go to category Other Applications and click Rosetta Stone
  • 3. Fill out fields for language learning.

• Volunteer Contributors file a bug under Community Tools.
  • 1. In the Component field select Rosetta Stone (should already be selected if clicking the link above).
  • 2. In cc line add: dianderson@mozilla.com
  • 3. In Summary line write License for Volunteer Contributor.
  • 4. In Description, indicate (a) interface language and (b) target language.
