Goals

To make it possible for add-ons to add swipeable pages to the new about:home redesign.

Specifications

User stories

Add-on developer

  • As an add-on developer, I would like the ability to add a whole new page to about:home that users can swipe to view.
  • As an add-on developer, I would like the ability to specify on which side of the about:home swipeable page layout my page will appear (left or right). [KR: to start, I think we should just specify where it is going to sit, especially if there are mmore add-ons that add more and more pages. Therefore I think this should be that the developer cannot specify to this degree.]
  • As an add-on developer, I do not expect to be able to specify precisely where my page appears in the about:home layout. [KR this kind of goes to the above, and probably because we don't know how many add-ons a user will have that utilizes this feature.]
  • As an add-on developer, I would like to be able to add a new about:home page and content to the about:home "promotional banner" tile (see: Add-ons can add content to the "promotional banner" tile) with the same add-on, and I would like to be able to update them both at the same time (ie: if the data on the page changes, I would like the content in the tile to change as well, etc.) [KR I don't think this should be included in an initial release, and not sure we want to include it at all. Not just because it would be complex, but these add-ons should be treated separately because we will need to ensure a degree of control for the actual about:home page that we wouldn't wholly expect here.]
  • As an add-on developer, I do not expect to be able to specify which about:home page is the default. [KR correct!]

User

  • As a user, I would like to be able to rearrange the pages in my about:home layout into an order that makes sense to me, including any of the default Mozilla pages. [KR: this would land in an about:home customization feature and not related to this add-on. Perhaps set up a project page that would allow user about:home customization and include this in there?]
  • As a user, I expect any about:home pages added by add-ons I have installed will be removed when I uninstall that add-on. If this will involve data-loss, I want to be informed of that and asked to verify that I still want to remove the add-on.
  • As a user, I would like to be able to specify which about:home page is my default, including any pages added by add-ons I have installed. (NOTE: verify with Ian and Karen that this is actually something we want...as a user I want it, but I'm not sure whether product/ux is ok with it). [KR: see my point above - this should be a customization request and not related to this add-on]

[KR: * As a user, I want it clearly shown that an added page is attributed to a specific add-on.]
