Welcome to Community Communications aka CommSquared!

This is the new home of Community Communications, codename "CommSquared", formerly known as CommsReps, a program which is being retired as of March 2014.

What's CommSquared?

CommSquared is a portmanteau word for Community Communications aka Comms^2. CommSquared Mozillians are people who are doing PR (press relations) on behalf of Mozilla. They build and maintain a relationship with local members of the press in order to work with them so that Mozilla is well represented in the local media. CommSquared is the proud son of the CommsReps program, but without the Reps part.

CommSquared members work closely with Mozilla paid staff of the Communications team.

How do CommSquared members communicate between them?

A mailing list has been put in place - mail.mozilla.org/listinfo/commsquared . Other ways of communicating are being used, but the CommSquared mailing list is the central tool.

  • Sounds exciting! How do I become a CommSquared member?
    • Get in touch with Tristan Nitot, who's leading the CommSquared effort. The best way is to send an email to tnitot (a) m.......com <- you know how to do this, right?
  • I'm good with people, but I don't have experience in the field of PR. Is this an issue to become a CommSquared member?
    • Not at all! Mozilla is working on providing training in order to address this!
  • Are CommSquared members spokespeople?
    • No, not necessarily. Actually in most cases, they are not. CommSquared people are basically PR people. They build and maintain relationships with reporters. They feed reporters with information related to Mozilla, its products its technology, its mission and whatever is relevant. They help reporters to get answers from Mozilla when needed. When they get questions, they put reporters in touch with a spokesperson.
  • Are CommSquared members spokespeople?
    • Not right away. To be a spokesperson/ Spokespeople, you need to be media-trained. Once you are, you can become a spokesperson.
  • What's the difference between CommSquared members and evangelists?
    • Evangelists are technical people that explain technical things to developers. PR people such as CommSquared members are not necessarily technically savvy that talk to reporters in order to expose them to topics that Mozilla wants to discuss.
