Stage 1: Definition

1. Feature overview

Allow Firefox for Android to open pages in native apps (e.g. YouTube, Maps) when available. Incorporate the features of the Helper Apps add-on into Firefox for Android.

2. Users & use cases

  • If the user is on a YouTube page, they should be able to open that page/video in the YouTube app
  • If the user long presses on a link that goes to a YouTube video, the context menu should give them the option to open that in the YouTube app
  • Clicking a Youtube link in Wikipedia should bring up the native app (or helper app pref selector)
  • Clicking a Youtube link on the Tweetdeck page should play the video in the native Youtube app (or show the helper app pref selector first)
  • If the user selects a phone number, the context menu should offer to call
  • For other native apps that are installed on the phone, context menu for links should offer to open content in the respective native app (e.g. Wapedia for Wikipedia, BBC iPlayer - http://www.bbc.co.uk/mobile/iplayer/, TubeMate, etc.)

3. Dependencies

  • bug 653833 - Upstream Helper Apps add-on for spawning to Android helper apps from Fennec
  • bug 599636 - (WONTFIX) Fennec should offer to open YouTube videos in YouTube helper app
