Open issues/risks

  • Needs a developer to pick up the existing patch and make it work.

Risks

Mostly testing on all the hardware and OS variations, making sure the download and unpack is smooth from Safari (and less important, Chrome).

Stage 1: Definition

1. Feature overview

It's common that people run Firefox from the disk image on the Mac even after they have decided to use it full-time, because OS X has a really bad application install experience. We want to auto-detect when this happens, and offer to move the application and create an icon in the dock when you run from the disk image.

This feature falls primarily in the Experience category (from the "Discover, Experience, and Connect" vision statement.)

2. Users & use cases

`

3. Dependencies

`

4. Requirements

  • Firefox should offer to move itself to Applications on startup
  • We should gracefully handle it if you don't have the right permissions to do so
  • We should give the option to not ask again for those people who want their applications to live in a different location
  • We should ask if you want to add an icon to the dock (should be checked by default)
  • Ideally (but optionally): Ask whether you want Firefox to be the default browser as part of that dialog

Non-goals

Mac App Store availability.
