:The "Tab progress In Throbbers" idea has already been tried out in Chrome's download status indicator which is a pie chart with 8 segments. It is more compact than a progress bar which fills the tab up but just as visible unlike a line. Also it gives a sense of how much the tab has loaded as a percentage without using numbers.
