My attendance at MozFest server several different projects, all of which are in service of our top-line organization goals of 'Enable communities that have impact.'
1. Co-presenting a session called "Feedback Loop: Games and Collaboration to Teach Community Building."
During this session we'll play test a game we've developed that models and teaches best practices with regard to soliciting and giving feedback in asynchronous communication channels. Playtesting this at MozFest is ideal because the most appropriate audience is already assembled there for us. MozFest attendees include a high percentage of communitiy builders and experienced game designers who will be able to give us critical feedback on our project. Moreoever, we'll discuss how we can further develop games as way to teach community building skills across Mozilla in a scalable matter.
Work product: Results from the play test of our game, including feedback from players who are skilled community organizers, game designers and curriculum builders.
Impact: We'll be able to improve our game, which is key part of our community building curriculum for 2014, and we'll have done so without incurring additional costs of having to travel to a Mozilla office or space.
2. Collaboration with Open Coalition
While at MozFest, I will collaborate with members of the Open Coalition on the creating and editing of community building documentation. The Open Coalition is a group of community organizers from a range of open source / data / culture and knowledge organizations like Wikimedia, Open Knowledge Foundation and more. Collaborating with this group of subject matter experts provides the opportunity to share best practices with regarding to community building AND to efficiently create documentation that is useful to all the communities involved.
Work product: Improved community building documentation.
Impact: Improved community building documentation provides a greatly needed resource to the entire Mozilla community. Working on this documentation with a co-hort of skilled community organizers from outside of Mozilla maximizes our return on investment in that documentation.
3. Advertise contribution opportunities across L10n, Webdev and MozillaWiki partnerships
While at MozFest I'll have the opportunitiy to speak to members of the public who are already interested in our mission about specific contribution opportunities in my partnership areas, includiing Localization, Webdev and MozillaWiki.
Work product: TBD. I'm researching ways we can track this kind of outreach.
Impact: The MozFest audience is a highly targeted one. We know many people who come are already invested in our mission and so it's a great opportunity to reach out to contributors who have the potential to be highly engaged. It's also a great opportunity to talk with existing volunteers about new opportunities.
