The Add-on converter Add-on Project

The Problem

There are many FireFox and Thunderbird add-ons that would work also for SeaMonkey after Conversion with the great Add-on Converter for SeaMonkey. But too few users know about this possibility, and currently too many steps are necessary to get the converted add-on

The Plan

Create a SeaMonkey add-on for following tasks

  1. Add a “SeaMonkey Download button" to add-on page view what will transfer the add-on URL to Converter if add-on ist not "SeaMonkey ready" and conversion is promising
  2. Check in “Works after conversion database“ how reliably converted add-on will work
  3. Give user a help for decision by a compatibility rating (based on list on SeaMonkey/AddonCompat, may be additional sources) for decision to

Project Details

ToDos

  1. Create database showing add-ons what will word after conversion and also add-ons what will not work after conversion
    1. Check whether SeaMonkey/AddonCompat is suitable
  2. Test more add-ons and leave compatibility rating at SeaMonkey/AddonCompat
  3. check whether add-on Add-on Compatibility Reporter 2.0.5 can be used for a compatibility database for the planned download tool?
  4. Help texts
  5. Translation / Localization will be required for Help texts, UI

Possible Sticking Points

  1. Future of AMO is unknown.
  2. Will Mozilla plan only to allow installation of “signed" add-ons have impact?
  3. currently discussed database for compatibility rating (SeaMonkey/AddonCompat)
    1. only has 1 single maintainer
    2. is very vulnerable, because everybody can modify it
  4. Search Add-ons filter might make it impossible to find the Add-ons what are working perfectly with SeaMonky, at leas a part of the problem might be
    1. bug 1162864- Add-on find results from speech balloon not found in final search results
    2. bug 1139273 - Search Addons will not show most plausible hits

Ideas

(Please liave your signature behind your idea)

  • Try to get running Add-on Compatibility Reporter (bug 1149016 - Add-on Compatibility Reporter 2.0.5 does not work with SeaMonkey), so that collective experience can be used for add-on-compatibility ratings instead of painful editing of SeaMonkey/AddonCompat -- Rrbd (talk) 22:44, 5 May 2015 (PDT)
  • Create an AMO browsing extension that would add suitable converter buttons to AMO and possibly fix some other issues that SeaMonkey users come across at AMO. The idea is for this extension to be bundled in SeaMonkey. Initial proposal: bug 1145026#c17
  • Encourage users to share experience with converted add-ons -- Rrbd (talk) 21:56, 17 May 2015 (PDT)
