Community Tools enable the Mozilla community to better contribute to Mozilla. These tools create discovery and collaboration opportunities that bring Mozillians closer together and make our projects more successful.

Community Tools Strategy

What is this document!?

This strategy and roadmap is being developed with the direct inputs of key Mozilla stakeholders, including the entire Mozilla community; engineering teams; user support teams; marketing and engagement teams; and the entire Mozilla community. You can give your input by contacting the Mozillians team.

Phonebook

In 2013, the Phonebook will become the ultimate way to contact and learn more about people involved with Mozilla in three ways.

First, the Phonebook will allow users to have full control over the privacy of their data. Users will be able to set privacy controls for each field on profiles, allowing information to be public for the first time. Public profiles give Mozillians a way to share their Mozilla contributors widely. Having fields that are more privacy sensitive will allow users to provide more information that isn't well suited for public viewing or for all Mozillians to see.

Second, the Phonebook will have robust profiles that show an individuals' accomplishments. Profiles will display earned badges and activity across different areas in Mozilla. Teams and websites will be able to feed activity to profiles so that individuals can see their own achievements as well as those of others.

Third, the Phonebook will serve as the primary source of contact information and contributor activity for the Mozilla community. With several systems being used for finding individuals and measuring activity, the Phonebook will become the single tool that will replace other systems like the Paid Staff Phonebook.

Other considerations:

  • Activity feeds and badges on individual profiles could be aggregated into community health metrics. This isn't in the scope of the Phonebook necessarily, but a community health metrics tool could connect to Phonebook API.

The site will be built over a series of phases. Our current thinking about milestones is below:
